Selah Coffee House

From Rézkígyó to Selah

Rézkígyó Coffee House had its beginnings in February 1999 in the rented basement of Picasso Point, a bar located in the VI. District on Hajós utca.  Our vision was to gather youth and young adults who would not normally step foot inside a church.  We wanted to create a safe, non-religious space where good conversations could take place and where friendships could be made.  Rézkígyó started as a Friday night event, incorporating live music and mini-theatrical presentations.  These evenings were a lot of fun and were a great success as we found many opportunities to meet new people and offer hope and encouragement to them.
Our Friday nights came to an end in November 1999 as we had to give up our rented space.  This initial nine-month trial gave us the motivated we needed to search for a property to purchase.  Rézkígyó needed a permanent home.  Our goal was to create an atmosphere where people could relax and have fun, and where they would feel honored, valued, encouraged and inspired. Within the context of that community we believed that we could form meaningful relationships.
We wanted to offer spiritual truth and help others on their own journey toward answer some of life’s deepest and most important questions.
Through a long and almost impossible process we were finally able to purchase the current facility located on Paulay Ede utca in September 2000.  This was truly miraculous as we had no money.  All we had was our faith, vision, and the crazy idea that somehow God could make this happen despite the obstacles and our lack of resources.  After some initial renovations, Rézkígyó Coffee House re-opened in April 2002.  Although the ground floor was the primary space we desired, we re-opened initially in the basement which had a similar vibe to the Picasso Point location.
The new location turned out to be amazing and we held many electrifying Friday night events there.  We also began to use the space for other events throughout the week.  It truly had an “underground” feeling to it.  The outside entrance had few markings.  To find us one had to make their way along a dimly-lit pathway, down a dark stair case, and finally into the warm and beautiful space were they could enjoy a nice coffee and chill with good music and conversation.
Over the course of the next 10 years we raised more funding to renovate the entire building, eventually moving the Friday night events to the ground floor in September 2013.  The help that we received was astounding.  The work was accomplished by our YWAM team, 100’s of volunteers, short term teams, and local artists and contractors. There are many people’s “fingerprints” all over the entire building as so many labored at their own expense to make the new Ministry Center a reality.

After operating on an “event” basis for many years we eventually felt compelled to broaden our reach by opening our doors as an operational coffee house, open every weekday.  The Friday night live-music events have continued to be the backbone of our vision while we have expanded what we do in many ways.  Partnering with artists, youth groups, churches, and like-minded organizations, we have been able to host a wide variety of events.  Our brilliantly talented coffee house team has invested tremendous amounts of effort, time, and energy to make Rézkígyó the beautiful and inviting space it is today.  Their amazing gifts and abilities have helped to create the current look and feel, making it inviting to all who enter.

Now we find ourselves at the start of a new exciting phase.  Rézkígyó is becoming Selah!  This has been a long, thorough, and very intentional process.  We believe that there is more to come and more to offer. We are excited about expanding the vision and outreach of our beloved coffee house which began in a very simple and very modest rented basement through a small group of crazy pioneers willing to take a risk and step out in faith!
